How to use it

  1. Enter how many production deployments you made in the period and how many days it covers.
  2. Enter the median hours from commit to production, how many deployments caused a failure, and the median hours to restore service.
  3. Read the band for each metric and the overall rating, then pick the weakest metric to work on first.

Frequently asked questions

What are the four DORA metrics?

Deployment frequency, lead time for changes, change failure rate and time to restore service. The first two measure speed, the last two measure stability.

Where do the bands come from?

From the 2023 Accelerate State of DevOps report by DORA at Google Cloud. The bands change a little between reports, so treat them as guides, not grades.

How is the overall band calculated?

As the rounded average of the four metric bands. A single weak metric pulls it down, which is the point: speed without stability is not elite.

How do I improve lead time?

Shrink batch sizes, run CI faster, cut review wait time and automate deploys. Slow CI is often the cheapest lead-time win.
