WarpBuild Alternatives for GitHub Actions in 2026
Last updated
People leave WarpBuild mostly over price per minute or cache billing. Ubicloud and RunsOn are cheaper, Blacksmith has a larger free allowance, and compiler.dev is cheaper at 8 vCPU and falls back to your old runners. This is a buyer's list; prices were checked in October 2026 on each vendor's public page.
Why teams look for alternatives to WarpBuild
WarpBuild is a solid, transparent product. Its pricing page lists every size, which is more than several rivals do. The reasons to look around:
- Per-minute rate. Linux x64 is $0.004/min at 2 vCPU, $0.016 at 8, $0.064 at 32. At 8 vCPU that is above Ubicloud ($0.005 standard), Namespace ($0.012 pay as you go) and compiler.dev ($0.012).
- Cache storage is billed. $0.20 per GB per month plus $0.0001 per operation. A repo with big caches needs a forecast.
- Free allowance is unstated. The page says no payment method is needed until you reach the free usage limit, without giving the amount.
- Extras cost extra. SAML SSO is $250 a month.
- You want your own cloud, cheaper. WarpBuild's bring-your-own-cloud mode is $0.002/min on AWS, GCP or Azure, which some teams find still adds up.
- No described fallback if the service has an incident.
What WarpBuild does well: public prices at every size, Arm and macOS (M4 Pro 6 vCPU at $0.08/min), and a published BuildJet migration mapping.
Quick picks
| Alternative | Best for | Pricing model | Link |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ubicloud | Lowest per-minute rate | Per minute, $2.50 monthly credit | ubicloud.com |
| compiler.dev | 8 vCPU Linux x64, fallback, no plan | Prepaid credit, no expiry | compiler.dev/pricing |
| Blacksmith | 3,000 free minutes, co-located cache | Per minute plus add-ons | blacksmith.sh |
| Namespace | Many shapes, prepaid discounts | Pay as you go or plans | namespace.so |
| RunsOn | Large volume in your AWS | Annual license plus AWS bill | runs-on.com |
| Depot | Docker image builds | Monthly plan plus overage | depot.dev |
The alternatives
Ubicloud
Standard x64: $0.00125/min (2 vCPU), $0.005 (8), $0.01 (16), with Arm at the same rate. The cheapest managed option. Tradeoffs: the default for new accounts is a premium tier that costs more, and no macOS runners.
compiler.dev
One line, runs-on: [self-hosted, Linux, compiler-ci], and jobs run on a fresh 8 vCPU / 16 GB VM at $0.012/min. Other sizes: 2 vCPU $0.003, 4 vCPU $0.006, 16 vCPU $0.024, 32 vCPU $0.048. No monthly fee; prepaid credit never expires. If credit runs out or anything fails, jobs run on your original runners. The tradeoffs are no Arm and no Windows, and macOS is early access ($0.055/min for M4 Pro 14-core). Measured results are on the benchmarks page; we have no WarpBuild numbers.
Blacksmith
Free 3,000 minutes a month, then $0.004/min for 2 vCPU x64 and $0.0025 for Arm. A cache co-located with runners serves actions/cache without edits. Tradeoff: larger sizes are not priced on its page, and Docker layer caching via sticky disks is $0.50 per GB per month.
Namespace
$0.012/min at 8 vCPU / 16 GB pay as you go, with rates inside the Team ($100/month) and Business ($250/month) plans at about two thirds of that. Many RAM-heavy shapes. macOS is $0.09/min for 6 vCPU, higher than WarpBuild's $0.08.
RunsOn
Runs in your AWS account. No per-minute markup; EC2 is billed by AWS per second, with an annual license from EUR 300. It suits steady volume. You operate the AWS side.
Depot
Best for Docker builds, with persistent cache disks. $20 and $200 monthly plans, overage $0.006/min at 2 vCPU. Not cheaper for plain test minutes.
How to choose
- Compare at your size. If you run 8 vCPU, WarpBuild's $0.016 is the number to beat; use the runner price table.
- Count Arm and macOS minutes. They narrow the field to WarpBuild, Blacksmith, Namespace and Ubicloud (Arm only).
- Estimate cache storage, because it changes WarpBuild's real price.
- Trial the top two on real workflows. The cost calculator turns rates into a monthly bill.
Migration notes
WarpBuild labels look like warp-ubuntu-2204-x64-4x. Search for them and replace:
grep -rn "warp-" .github/workflows
jobs:
test:
# was: runs-on: warp-ubuntu-latest-x64-8x
runs-on: [self-hosted, Linux, compiler-ci]
If you use WarpBuild's cache or Docker actions, swap back to the standard actions/cache and Docker actions first. Caches do not move, so expect a cold first run; see GitHub Actions caching. For the full comparison with compiler.dev, see WarpBuild vs compiler.dev. More options are in the provider ranking.
FAQ
Is WarpBuild expensive?
At 2 vCPU it is mid-pack ($0.004/min). At 8 vCPU it is the highest listed in this guide at $0.016/min. Cache storage and SSO are extra.
Which WarpBuild alternative is cheapest?
Ubicloud's standard tier on published rates; RunsOn at high volume.
Does WarpBuild have macOS?
Yes, M4 Pro at $0.08/min for 6 vCPU and $0.16/min for 12 vCPU.
Can I try an alternative without leaving?
Yes. runs-on is per job, so move one workflow and compare.
