Ubicloud Alternatives for GitHub Actions in 2026

Last updated

Ubicloud is the cheapest managed runner on paper, so people who leave it are usually after macOS, a bigger free allowance, support, or a fallback. WarpBuild is the closest alternative with macOS, Blacksmith has the most free minutes, and compiler.dev is the simplest switch for Linux x64. Prices below were checked in October 2026 on each vendor's public page.

Why teams look for alternatives to Ubicloud

  • No macOS runners. Its pricing docs list Linux x64 and Arm only. If you build iOS or macOS apps you need a second provider.
  • The default tier costs more. Standard x64 is $0.00125/min at 2 vCPU, but premium x64 is $0.002 (2 vCPU) to $0.030 (30 vCPU) per minute and is the default for new accounts. Teams are sometimes surprised by that.
  • Two sets of numbers. The marketing page and the docs pricing page differ, so the docs page is the one to trust.
  • A small free allowance. $2.50 per month is about 1,250 minutes of 2 vCPU, and a card is required.
  • Fewer extras. Some teams want a larger cache product, Docker layer caching or sticky disks.
  • No described fallback if the service has trouble.

Where Ubicloud wins: the lowest per-minute rates in the market, and it is open source cloud software.

The alternatives

WarpBuild

Per-size public pricing on x64: $0.004/min (2 vCPU) to $0.064/min (32 vCPU), with Arm from $0.003/min. macOS M4 Pro is $0.08/min (6 vCPU) and $0.16/min (12 vCPU). It also has a bring-your-own-cloud mode at $0.002/min. The tradeoff is price: its 8 vCPU x64 rate of $0.016/min is more than three times Ubicloud's standard $0.005.

Blacksmith

3,000 free minutes a month, 2 vCPU x64 at $0.004/min, Arm at $0.0025/min, Windows at $0.008/min and macOS M4 at $0.08/min. A cache co-located with the runners helps actions/cache without edits. Tradeoff: larger sizes are not priced on its page, and add-ons like sticky disks ($0.50 per GB per month) raise the bill.

compiler.dev

Switch with runs-on: [self-hosted, Linux, compiler-ci]. The default 8 vCPU / 16 GB machine is $0.012/min, higher than Ubicloud's standard 8 vCPU rate of $0.005/min but with a fresh VM per job and a Docker layer cache on the box. Jobs fall back to your original runners if credit runs out. No Arm, and macOS is early access at $0.055/min for M4 Pro 14-core. See the benchmarks for measured speedups against GitHub-hosted runners; we have not benchmarked Ubicloud.

Namespace

Linux x64 from $0.003/min (2 vCPU) to $0.048/min (32 vCPU) pay as you go, plus macOS at $0.09/min for 6 vCPU. Prepaid plans cost less per minute but add a monthly fee ($100 or $250).

RunsOn

If your goal is the lowest total cost, this can undercut everyone: EC2 is billed by AWS per second with no markup, plus a license from EUR 300 a year and about $7 a month of control-plane cost. You run the AWS account, so quotas and spot capacity are yours to manage.

Cirrus Runners

Flat $150 per runner per month, unlimited minutes, one concurrent job per runner. Linux x86 runners are 16 vCPU / 48 GB, which is big. Good when runners are busy most hours, wasteful if not.

How to choose

  1. Decide first whether macOS is needed. It removes Ubicloud from the list for those jobs.
  2. If you care about the lowest price, check whether you are on the standard or premium tier before comparing.
  3. Compare at the size you run in the runner price table.
  4. Trial the top two on a real workflow.

Migration notes

Replace the label. For example, from a Ubicloud label to compiler.dev:

jobs:
  build:
    # was: runs-on: ubicloud-standard-8
    runs-on: [self-hosted, Linux, compiler-ci]

Search for ubicloud in .github/ to catch every job. Caches do not follow you, so the first run is cold; our caching guide explains key design. If you leave to get a bigger machine, check how to pick a runner size. For the full comparison with compiler.dev, see Ubicloud vs compiler.dev. The wider field is in the provider ranking.

FAQ

Is anything cheaper than Ubicloud?

Only RunsOn at scale, because you pay AWS cost with no per-minute markup. Among managed services, Ubicloud's standard tier is the lowest published.

Which Ubicloud alternative has macOS?

WarpBuild, Blacksmith, Namespace and compiler.dev (early access) list macOS runners.

Why is my Ubicloud bill higher than the pricing table?

New accounts default to the premium x64 tier, priced above standard. Check your runner labels.

Do I need to change my workflow files a lot?

No. Usually only the runs-on label per job.
