Best GitLab CI Alternatives in 2026

Last updated

Most teams that leave GitLab CI also leave GitLab hosting, so the best alternative is usually GitHub Actions. If you want to keep your repo on GitLab, Buildkite or Semaphore can run builds against it. This is a buyer's list, with prices checked in October 2026 on each vendor's public page.

Why teams look for alternatives to GitLab CI

GitLab CI is one of the best-integrated pipelines available, so be clear about your reason.

  • Few free minutes. Per GitLab's pricing, Free has 400 compute minutes a month, Premium ($29 per user per month, billed annually) 10,000, and Ultimate 50,000.
  • Per-user price for CI you might not need. Moving to Premium for compute minutes also buys seats for everyone.
  • Extra minutes are bought in blocks. $10 per 1,000 minutes, a one-time payment, on all plans.
  • The company moved code hosting. If your organization standardised on GitHub, running CI in a second platform adds permissions and secrets to manage.
  • Hiring and ecosystem. Many developers already know GitHub Actions and its marketplace.
  • Shared-runner speed. Shared runners are general purpose; many teams add their own runners or shift to a faster provider.

GitLab strengths: one product for repo, issues, registry and CI, mature include/needs pipelines, and a self-managed option.

The alternatives

GitHub Actions

The default if code moves to GitHub. No per-user fee for CI itself: you pay for minutes (2-core Linux $0.006/min, 8-core $0.022/min). Tradeoff: GitLab's rules, include and environments map across with some rework, and the move touches issues and merge requests too.

GitHub Actions on compiler.dev

After moving to Actions, runs-on: [self-hosted, Linux, compiler-ci] runs jobs on a fresh 8 vCPU / 16 GB VM at $0.012/min, falling back to your original runners if credit runs out. Benchmarks show median 1.5× faster across 18 measured stacks (15 faster, 2 the same, 1 slower) than GitHub-hosted. It needs GitHub; it does not run GitLab pipelines. No Arm or Windows.

Buildkite

Works with GitLab repos. Pro is $30 per active user per month and you run the agents (10 included, then $3.50 each). Good if you are outgrowing shared runners and want control.

Semaphore

Works with several Git hosts. Pay as you go: $15 free credit a month, Ubuntu x64 2 vCPU at $0.0075/min, Arm at $0.003/min, self-hosted agents at $0.0025/min. Tradeoff: a smaller ecosystem.

CircleCI

Hosted CI with 30,000 free credits a month. Credits expire monthly and Docker layer caching costs extra; see CircleCI alternatives.

Jenkins

Free and self-hosted. It gives complete control and takes real maintenance; the advisory page lists 12 security advisories in 2025.

How to choose

  1. Decide whether the repo moves. If it does, GitHub Actions removes a tool.
  2. If it does not, choose between self-hosting your own runners on GitLab and using Buildkite or Semaphore.
  3. Estimate minutes: GitLab's $10 per 1,000 equals $0.01/min, above GitHub's 2-core $0.006/min. Use the cost calculator.
  4. Check that your Docker and registry workflows have an equivalent, see Docker layer caching in CI.

Migration notes

A .gitlab-ci.yml job maps to a workflow:

# .gitlab-ci.yml
test:
  stage: test
  image: node:20
  script:
    - npm ci
    - npm test
  cache:
    key: $CI_COMMIT_REF_SLUG
    paths: [node_modules/]
# .github/workflows/ci.yml
name: ci
on: [push, pull_request]
jobs:
  test:
    runs-on: [self-hosted, Linux, compiler-ci]
    steps:
      - uses: actions/checkout@v4
      - uses: actions/setup-node@v4
        with:
          node-version: 20
          cache: npm
      - run: npm ci && npm test

Stages become needs, image becomes a container or a setup action, cache becomes actions/cache or the cache option of a setup action (see caching), and CI/CD variables become secrets. GitHub's Actions Importer (gh actions-importer) can audit and convert much of a GitLab pipeline for review. For the full comparison with compiler.dev, see GitLab CI vs compiler.dev.

FAQ

Can I use GitHub Actions with a GitLab repo?

Not natively. Actions runs on GitHub repositories. For GitLab repos use Buildkite, Semaphore, CircleCI or Jenkins.

What does GitLab charge for extra minutes?

$10 per 1,000 compute minutes, one-time, on all plans (checked October 2026).

Is Jenkins a good GitLab CI alternative?

Only if you want full control and accept the maintenance.

How long does migration take?

A simple pipeline is hours; complex includes and environments take days.
